In a spanking, there are two basic sensations you can convey: enthusiasts refer to them as "sting" and "thud." This is a personal choice, so play around with your hand and maybe a few selected household implements until you get an idea of what you want.
The basic principle is this: the larger the striking surface, the more thud. The smaller the striking surface, the more sting it will create. So a crop will sting more than a flogger and a small paddle will sting more than a large one.
There are three common materials for paddles: leather, wood and lexan. Wood is the most rigid, and thus offers the most thud, while lexan adds more sting regardless of its size. Leather is a good middle ground, and does not risk breaking (although it requires the most care).
To increase the impact, some paddles have holes drilled in them or studs added. To increase sensuality, some paddles have one side lined in fur or another soft material.
Every bottom is different, so experiment.
